Sacred Hair

As a Licensed Managing Cosmetologist, I have a diverse clientele which includes individuals belonging to the Muslim community.  Many people view hair differently in saying that, there are different cultures of women in this world.  I find it interesting that even with the cultural differences and Spiritual differences in this world, hair is all made up of a cuticle, cortex and medulla. Accepting differences can be a challenge to individuals who do not understand culture. People ask why do women  cover their hair, and most women who cover their hair are of Muslim faith. To be Muslim is to submit to the will of GOD whom is the creator of all. In the Muslim community,  hair is Sacred and should not be desired, and  is considered to be an attractive asset which a woman has that is only to be desired by her husband therefore, that is why Muslim women wear what is called a headscarf or Hijab. The hair should not be looked upon and desired by no other man. For those who are not willing to understand this then maybe this blog isn't for you. I say that because at may help other stylists and designers understand other cultures and not to be critical of individuals who are different from Western Society.

I FIND THAT THE WELLA COLOR LINE IS THE MOST INTENSE LINE OUT HERE FOR LONG LASTING COLORS.  WELLA COLORS CAN ALSO BE USED ON NATURAL CURLY HAIR AS WELL. MESSAGE TO ALL NATURAL HAIR WEARERS AND THOSE CONSIDERING THE TRANSITION FROM CHEMICALLY RELAXED HAIR TO NATURAL HAIR

IT TAKES A STRONG INDIVIDUAL WITH LOTS OF PATIENCE & COURAGE TO WEAR THEIR HAIR IN IT'S HONEST NATURAL STATE. OVER THE WEEKEND I HAD A CLIENT WHO CRIED OUT OF FRUSTRATION BECAUSE HER HAIR HAS BEEN RELAXED OVER TIME AND WITH THE NEW GROWTH COMING IN, SHE IS UNHAPPY. SHE IS GOING THROUGH THAT TRANSITION PHASE WHEN THE ENDS OF THE HAIR IS STRAIGHT AND THE ROOTS ARE IN THEIR NATURAL STATE. SOME OF MY REMEDIES FOR A HALT TO FRUSTRATION ARE AS FOLLOWS:
1. THINK ABOUT A BRAID STYLE THAT WOULD COMPLIMENT YOUR FACE AND SETTLE YOUR NERVES
2. GO ON YOUTUBE.COM AND SEARCH BRAID STYLES FOR EITHER AFRICAN OR NON AFRICAN WOMEN
3. CONSIDER THE "BIG CHOP", WHICH IS COMPLETELY CUTTING OFF ALL CHEMICALLY PROCESSED HAIR DOWN TO THE NEW GROWTH THIS WAY YOUR HAIR CAN CONTINUE TO GROW IN IT'S NATURAL STATE.
4. CONSIDER WEARING A WIG THAT IS BEFITTING TO YOU UNTIL YOUR HAIR GROWS OUT MORE TO YOUR LIKING

7. STAY AWAY FROM UNNECESSARY HAIR PRODUCTS AND TAKE VITAMINS SUCH AS: BIOTIN, HAIR NAILS AND SKIN FOR WOMEN.(CAN BE PURCHASED AT GNC, WALMART, KROGER, OR ANY STORE THAT SELLS VITAMINS)
8. CONSIDER YOU.....TRY A MAKE-OVER INSIDE AND OUT LIKE FOR INSTANCE, EXERCISE, START EATING VEGGIES AND TRY GOING TO A PROFESSIONAL MAKE-UP ARTIST JUST TO HERE WHAT THEY HAVE TO SAY ABOUT YOU!
EVEN THOUGH OUR HAIR IS ONE OF OUR MAIN CONCERNS, THE MEDIA HAS PUT PRESSURE ON IMAGE. TO EXPLAIN, COMMERCIALS ESPECIALLY OFTEN DEPICT WOMEN TO HAVE LONG, SILKY, STRAIGHT, LUXURIOUS SHINY HAIR. NEVER MIND THOSE SOMETIMES DISCOURAGING MESSAGES AND TRY CONCENTRATING ON HOW YOU FEEL ABOUT YOURSELF NO MATTER WHAT IS BEING DISPLAYED ON TELEVISION. LAST, JUST REMEMBER, NATURAL HAIR IS HONEST, UNIQUE, AND DESIRED BY MANY.....DON'T GIVE UP ON YOUR CROWN AND GLORY!

MESSAGE TO STYLIST AND FASHIONISTAS

TO BE SUCCESSFUL, YOU DON'T HAVE TO DO EXTRAORDINARY THINGS, JUST DO ORDINARY THINGS EXTRAORDINARY WELL. THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IN CONSULTATIONS/COMMUNICATION IS TO HEAR WHAT ISN'T BEING SAID.....YOU CAN LEARN A LOT FROM WATCHING A PERSON BY THE WAY THEY STAND OR WALK. FOR INSTANCE ARMS ACROSS THE CHEST MOST TIMES SIGNIFIES THAT THIS PERSON IS DEFENSIVE, OR "I AM UNSURE OF MYSELF", OR NO EYE CONTACT CAN MEAN EITHER THEY ARE NERVOUS OR DISHONEST. AS ARTISTS, IT IS OUR JOB TO READ BODY LANGUAGE, AND MAKE OUR CLIENTS FEEL IMPORTANT BESIDES IN A MATTER OF 6-8 SECONDS YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO ASSESS THE PERSONALITY OF THE CLIENT WHOM WILL BE IN YOUR PERSONAL SPACE FOR MORE THAN A HALF AN HOUR. THE FIRST THING YOU MIGHT NOTICE A PERSON WEARING IS A "SMILE" ON THEIR FACE. IF THEY ARE NOT SMILING WE HAVE TO SMILE NO MATTER WHAT, AND AS STYLISTS WE HELP PEOPLE CREATE THEIR PERSONAL IMAGES, THEREFORE, BEFORE SUGGESTING A STYLE TO SOMEONE WE NEED TO KNOW HOW HE/SHE PERCEIVES THEMSELVES AND WHAT THEY BELIEVE THE IMAGE THEY ARE PORTRAYING TO THE WORLD IS. DON'T JUST LOOK AT YOUR CLIENTS AS HEADS OF HAIR THAT YOU CAN DESIGN AND FIX UP REAL FANCY. LOOK AT THE INDIVIDUAL AS A WHOLE FROM THE INSIDE AND OUT THAT WAY YOU CAN DETERMINE THE BEST REFLECTION OF WHO YOUR CLIENT IS AT WORK, AT PLAY AND LAST IN THE COMPANY OF THEMSELVES AND OTHERS....HERE ARE SOME QUESTIONS YOU CAN ASK:
CLOSE-ENDED QUESTIONS:
1. WHERE DO YOU WORK? WHAT IS YOUR JOB TITLE?
2. WHAT ACTIVITIES DO YOU PARTICIPATE IN? (SWIMMING, WORK-OUTS, ALL THESE HAVE AN EFFECT ON THE CONDITION OF THEIR HAIR)
3. WHAT TIME OF THE DAY DO YOU SHAMPOO? HOW OFTEN?
4. DO YOU USE A BLOW-DRYER? WITH A COMB ATTACHMENT? DIFFUSER?
5. HOW MUCH TIME DO YOU TAKE TO STYLE, COMB, BLOW-DRY YOUR HAIR?
6. WHAT PRODUCTS DO YOU USE ON YOUR HAIR? HOW ARE YOU LIKING THESE PRODUCTS?
7. DO YOU DRINK LOTS OF WATER OR TAKE VITAMINS?
THESE QUESTIONS WILL GIVE YOU A BETTER UNDERSTANDING ON YOUR CLIENT'S PERCEPTIONS OF THEMSELVES. NOW HERE ARE SOME OPEN-ENDED QUESTIONS TO HEAR THEIR "POINTS OF VIEWS"...
1. TELL ME WHAT YOU LIKE ABOUT HOW YOU ARE WEARING YOUR HAIR....
2. WHAT COULD YOU CHANGE ABOUT YOUR HAIR IF YOU COULD?
3. DESCRIBE A HAIR STYLE/LENGTH YOU HAVE WORN IN THE PAST THAT YOU REALLY FELT COMFORTABLE WITH...
4. PAST SALON EXPERIENCES WERE THEY GOOD OR BAD?
5.TELL ME YOUR STYLING ROUTINE, FOR WORK, SCHOOL, CHURCH, OR ETC.
